If you’re located in Dayton, OH, consider taking flight lessons at First Flight Aviation, where we’re proud to offer high-quality flying lessons. Read on to learn about the age requirements for flying.
Am I too young to fly?
Before flying on their own, a person has to obtain a student pilot certificate. To be eligible for a student pilot certificate, you have to be at least 16 years old. A 14-year-old can also obtain a student pilot certificate, although they are only allowed to pilot a glider or balloon until they turn 16. Applications for a student pilot certificate are available through the Integrated Airman Certification and Rating Application (IACRA) website.
You could also fill out FAA form 8710-1 and submit it to the Flight Standards District Office (FSDO). It’s also possible to send your application to a FAA-designated pilot examiner or a certified flight instructor. It should take around three weeks to receive your student pilot certificate, assuming everything looks all right with your application.
All this being said, you don’t necessarily need a student pilot certificate to take flying lessons from a certified instructor. Check with the flight school you’re interested in and ask about their age requirements.
Am I too old to fly?
You’re almost never too old to fly! There are pilots who have flown planes in their seventies and even their eighties. However, there are certain medical conditions that can cause issues with learning to fly. If you’re suffering from any medical conditions, be sure to consult your doctor before taking flying lessons. As long as you’re in good physical and mental health, your age shouldn’t be a problem when it comes to flying!
While age can sometimes play a role in one’s ability to fly, it doesn’t hinder a lot of people. As long as you’re at least 16 years old, you can obtain a student pilot certificate. Of course, you have to receive the proper training before receiving this certificate. That’s why it’s important to seek out a good flight school that will help you every step of the way.
While you might be excited to take that first solo flight, it’s essential that you’re properly prepared. A good flight school can teach you everything you need to know about taking your first solo flight.
